Volunteer Independent Visitor

Suitable for -

Opportunity Description

The role of a Change, Grow, Live Volunteer Independent Visitor is to build a healthy and child focused relationship with a young person who is in the care of the local authority, aiming to support them to grow in confidence, feel valued and thrive in their lives.

Independent Visitors are usually matched to a young person according to a variety of considerations such as interests and hobbies. You will be fully trained for the role and supported throughout. You would meet with the child once a month and be able to claim a small allowance to cover the cost of any activity which might include things like going to the movies, eating out, trampolining, outdoor walks, bowling, crazy golf. The list goes on!

We are currently looking for applicants from Telford and Wrekin to support young people in the same area. Volunteering mainly happens at weekends, during term holidays and after school hours as the young people are normally in school during the daytime.

This is what some of our young people tell us what they think about having an Independent Visitor:

“I want to try new things and have fun with activities. My IV is really fun and we talk about football and we have been cycling and out for pizza. He showed me how to fix the chain on my bike.” C/age 13

“The IV has always been there when she says she will, she listens to me and we talk about how I am doing. She is a good listener.  It’s good to have someone I can share with and I feel better after” S/age 17

This is what one of our volunteers said about being an Independent Visitor:

“I decided to volunteer when I retired from work. During my career I had often worked with young people and wanted to continue this in a voluntary capacity. I recognised early on that my role was not to problem solve but to be a friend to him. I am proud that my yp knows that I am there for him.”     Volunteer - L.M.

During your volunteering, you will gain valuable experience, skills and a sense of achievement as a well as initial mandatory volunteer training (virtual) ongoing supervision and support. Volunteer and young person session expenses are reimbursed within the scope of the Independent Visitor role and we have a benefits scheme which volunteers can access for discounts with services and retailers.
