Make a difference in your community and become a Cancer Champion.                         

Cancer champions can make a real difference to the lives and health of people in their local community within the Telford & Wrekin area by raising awareness of signs and symptoms of cancer and encouraging people to attend bowel, breast and cervical screening appointments.  

The role of Cancer champion involves:  

Encouraging people to take up screening invitations, know their body and report any concerns to health professionals                      

Listen and feedback the experiences and concerns and help us to understand what would makes things easier for people                     

Share helpful information and signpost to local GP & health services and provide reassurance to their community                     

Use every opportunity to encourage discussion around cancer, busting myths and sharing key facts                                                     

Tell others about the role of cancer champion and encourage them to join

We know engagement is low in certain groups and communities including (but not limited to) refugees, people with disabilities and severe mental illness and groups whose first language isn't English.

We are looking for people who understand these communities and are well engaged with them to help deliver key messages with trust and sensitivity and using words and phrases that are familiar and meaningful. 

A cancer champion raises people’s awareness about cancer, by engaging people in conversation. 

Supporting people over 50 to learn and become confident IT users, on computers, tablets or smartphones, also helping to solve problems.

The role could involve attending a regular session at a community venue and/or visiting clients at home.

Transition Telford is a registered charity and part of the Transition Network. 

Transition is a movement that has been growing since 2005.  It is about communities stepping up to address the big challenges they face by starting local.  By coming together, they are able to crowd-source solutions. They seek to nurture a caring culture, one focused on supporting each other, both as groups or as wider communities.

In practice, they are reclaiming the economy, sparking entrepreneurship, reimagining work, reskilling themselves and weaving webs of connection and support.  

We have projects in the areas of sustainable food production, energy, textiles, the Repair Cafe and we promote Re-use, Repair, Re-purpose.

We also are involved in the Community gardens, in Leegomery and Community orchard in Donnington

We would welcome volunteers at either of these sites. 

Liase with Transition Telford as to when and where.

Time:  An hour a week, possibly less, weather dependent.

BBS UK is looking for a new trustee, with professional experience (marketing, media, PR, finance or legal) to support the charity with its membership communication and engagement.

Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) is a rare genetic disorder causing blindness, learning disability, obesity and many other symptoms. BBS UK is the only UK charity supporting those with BBS and is committed to promoting positive health and wellbeing within the BBS community.

We do this by providing a range of support, information and advocacy services ensuring that those who contact us are supported, connected and informed about BBS and empowered to achieve the best possible outcome BBS UK is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and are looking for trustees who bring a range of experiences and skills to complement our team.

As a Trustee you will have: induction, training and reimbursable expenses.
