Mentor at Telford College

Opportunity Description

Education and employment go hand-in-hand at Telford College and we’ve reshaped our curriculum to meet the needs of the local business community, working in partnership with some of the area’s biggest companies.

We are looking for mentors to match to one (or two) of our 80 students aged 16-25 for one hour a month, that will start with an introduction in late June 2019, for 10 mentoring sessions that will get going in Sept 2019. In particular we are targeting this opportunity for students who are not yet sure what next steps they want to take in their education or careers. We believe that our mentees would very much benefit from the experience and guidance a mentor could provide, to support them as they prepare to enter higher education or into employment after they finish their course at college.

We strive to raise aspirations of our young people through a range of opportunities and believe that a mentor can support our students in the following ways;
- Inspire, support and encourage them to realise their potential
- Raise aspirations towards further education and the world of work
- Support with education, training and career choices
- Encourage learning, promote self-reliance and facilitate reflection
- Signpost them to other appropriate sources of support & networks

The programme is facilitated by One Million Mentors (1MM). 1MM believes strongly in community based mentoring, to benefit young people with low social capital, but whom all have wonderful potential if given some mentoring. Mentors have the opportunity to support their local community and give something back, using their own life and work experience to guide a local young person.

1MM is currently operating in West Midlands, Greater Manchester and the Cardiff City Region. In West Midlands we are partnering with Mayor Andy Street's Mayor's Mentors scheme looking to connect local business with local young people to address the urgent skills gap, increase employability skills and ensure local young people have access to the local opportunities that exist in the region.

As a Mentor, you’ll be invited to come along to the Mentor Induction Event, where we’ll explain our goals for the programme and conduct safeguarding checks.

Requirements

1MM requires all mentors to create and online profile and complete online training - this is modular and can be completed over a period of time. Sign-up and training can be found here: https://www.onemillionmentors.org.uk/mentor-register/ Following the completion of an online profile, mentors are invited to attend a mentor training workshop in their area, followed by a mentor induction at the college. Once training is complete, mentors will meet their mentees for up to one hour once per month, for up to 12 months - dates and times of meetings are set by the college.
