Street Champion

Suitable for -

Opportunity Description

Street Champions are volunteers who play an active role in their community.

They are the people who care about their local area, look out for their neighbours and want a clean, safe place to live.

If you are one of these highly valued individuals, the Council will help you to make your community spirit go even further.

There are a range of things you can choose to do as a Street Champion.

The roles are broken down into three key areas:

- Doing

- Reporting

- Monitoring

By becoming a Street Champion you will be encouraged and supported to organise community events that improve your neighbourhood and local environment such as litter picks and improvements to untidy pieces of land.

Requirements

Doing. These are things that some already do: • Spraying dog poo with a bright coloured paint to send a message to irresponsible dog owners that they are being watched (studies show this really works!) • Litter-picking • Cutting back overhanging branches or trimming hedges along footpaths.– helping to maintain Rights of Way • Putting up Council provided notices to deter dog fouling, litter and fly tipping • Helping elderly neighbours tidy their gardens, cut grass, prune trees and hedges • Helping to create and maintain community gardens •Setting up Facebook groups for local people that have a common interest in keeping their local area clean and tidy • Maintaining fences • Linking in with the work of your local Parish or Town Council Environmental Teams • Supporting community events that improve your neighbourhood and local environment Reporting. • By keeping a regular eye on your local area you can help us identify any issues, so they can be dealt with as quickly as possible. • You can report problems such as fly tipping, abandoned cars, dog fouling, broken pavements, potholes and graffiti via our website at www.telford.gov.uk or you can use our Everyday Telford App. Monitoring • We are looking for volunteers to help us monitor and gather data about their local area (for example litter levels, fly tipping, dog fouling, levels of graffiti, presence of weeds etc). This will help us ensure we are meeting a common set of cleanliness standards across the borough. Full training will be provided to help you do this.
