About Coram Beanstalk
At Coram Beanstalk we believe that reading opens the door to a brighter future. That's why we recruit, train and support volunteers to provide one-to-one reading support to children who struggle with their reading ability and confidence.
Coram Beanstalk reading helpers work with children on a one-to-one basis, giving them consistent support to improve their reading ability, increase their overall self-confidence and enjoyment of reading, and help give them the vital skills they need to succeed in school and life.
About the opportunity
Coram Beanstalk provides one-to-one literacy support to children across England who struggle with their reading ability and confidence.
Becoming a Coram Beanstalk reading helper is a great way to make a difference to a child’s life and enjoy a rewarding volunteering experience.
With Coram Beanstalk's volunteer programmes, you'll help three children on a one-to-one basis, twice a week, for at least 1 year (starting at any time of the year). With your support, you'll help them improve their reading ability, confidence and learn to love reading.
This simple method helps to motivate and support a child to feel more positive about their own reading, to check and deepen the child’s comprehension and to have fun with books in a way that enriches and enhances a child's learning, giving them the skills to succeed in their education.
What are we looking for?
No specific qualifications connected to working with children are required to become a Coram Beanstalk reading helper. All volunteers are subject to safer recruitment checks and must attend a training and selection day prior to being placed in a school. On-going support is provided by Coram Beanstalk's dedicated support team and online learning and development resources.
We need you to have a passion for working with children and giving them the best possible chance of improving their confidence and literacy, as well as being fluent in both spoken and written English. Our volunteer role descriptions (which can be found on our website) provide more detail about what we are looking for from volunteers.
Coram Beanstalk volunteers provide support to children twice per week, during school hours and term time for at least 1 year. To volunteer with Coram Beanstalk, you need to be able to commit to providing this support. Applicants are also required to:
- Provide us with two suitable referees
- Provide ID documents for us to carry out an enhanced DBS check
- Travel to and successfully complete a training and selection day
