Opportunity Description

Passionate about health and wellbeing? Want to help support your family, friends and local community to lead healthier lifestyles?

Health Champions are volunteers living in Telford and Wrekin who care about the health and wellbeing of those around them. They bring a mixture of their own life experiences, skills and training to make positive changes within their communities and help others to enjoy healthier lives by:

- raising awareness of healthy choices

- sharing important health-related messages

- helping to address barriers to accessing health services

- creating supportive networks

Supporting the community as a Health Champion can include a mixture of exciting roles and activities. You could incorporate the role into your day-to-day life through engaging in discussions and signposting around healthy lifestyles with others in your network like friends and family. You could also focus on topics that interest you such as healthy eating, mental health or sharing health condition information.

As well as raising awareness, there are opportunities for you to become more active in your community such as promoting public health messages at local community events or supporting local services with health and well-being related schemes.

Telford Health Champions are currently supporting Telford & Wrekin's new Blood Pressure Project- find out more below!

What is the time commitment?

Time commitment is flexible.

It is possible to fit the role into your existing day to day life and there are also opportunities to support others outside of your networks on both a regular and flexible basis.

If you would like to get involved in events and projects, you can choose where and when you would like to help out.

What will I get out of being a Health Champion?

Benefits to you include access to training, improving your own emotional and physical health, being involved in your local community, making new friends and gaining new skills.

Requirements

Training and support: You will be fully trained and supported in your role. The training will help you to have supportive conversations with others and will help to educate you further on topics relating to health e.g. mental health awareness. Volunteers can also access advice and guidance from the Volunteer Co-ordinator and have an opportunity to meet with their fellow volunteers through supervision/catch up sessions.

Telford Health Champions are now playing a huge role in supporting Telford & Wrekin Council's new blood pressure project!

Over the next 10 to 12 months, Telford & Wrekin Council will be offering blood pressure checks to residents at community events and faith groups.

Volunteers will be working with the blood pressure project lead Tink to speak about blood pressure and to take the blood pressure of those 40 years and over as this is the age when blood pressure can start to increase. However, under 40's will not be turned away.

If you wish to volunteer, you will receive training to provide you with the skills to take blood pressures, to talk to residents about health and well-being and to help to signpost them to local services where appropriate. Volunteers are not expected to offer specialist or clinical advice.

Volunteers will be asked to cover community venues as often, or as seldom as they would like. There is no pressure over the number of hours that a volunteer covers, the post is completely flexible. Though it would be great if volunteers could commit to one event per month so that they remain familiar with the blood pressure procedure.

High blood pressure is linked to a range of health issues including Strokes and Heart attacks. Helping people to be in the know about their Blood Pressure can help to save lives!

If you are interested in signing up as a Health Champion and becoming a blood pressure checker or would like to find out more, please contact out Volunteer coordinator, Chloe Harrigan at Health.Champions@telford.gov.uk
